"Ayurveda Panchakarma is a
comprehensive five-step detoxification and rejuvenation program
designed to eliminate deep-seated toxins (Ama) and balance the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha so as to restore physical and mental health
It involves
preparatory procedures (Purvakarma),
the main cleansing therapies (Pradhanakarma), and post-treatment care (Paschatkarma)
.
The Five Core Procedures (Pradhanakarma)
Panchakarma (meaning "five actions") utilizes
specialized techniques to remove imbalances:
*Vamana (Induced Vomiting): Therapeutic emesis to eliminate aggravated Kapha dosha.
*Virechana (Purgation): Induced laxation to cleanse toxins related to Pitta.
*Basti (Enema): Medicated oil or decoction enemas to treat Vata disorders, often considered the most important treatment.
*Nasya (Nasal Administration): Administration of oils or powders through the nostrils to cleanse the head and neck region.
*Raktamokshana (Bloodletting): Targeted detoxification to cleanse the blood (often replaced by more gentle therapies in modern practice).
The Three Stages of Treatment
Purvakarma (Preparation):
Before toxins are expelled, the body is prepared using
Snehana (internal and external oiling/massage) and
Swedana (herbal sweating/steam) to loosen toxins.
Pradhanakarma (Main Action): The specific, customized cleansing method (Vamana, Virechana, etc.) is based on the individual's constitution.
Paschatkarma (Post-treatment):
Dietary, lifestyle, and herbal routines (Samsarjana Krama) to restore digestion and rejuvenate the body.
